Details
Merdian II is a contemporary classical timepiece, combining the disciplined proportions and mechanical integrity of historic precision clocks with a distinctly modern sculptural language.
Technically and historically unique.
Precision timekeeper with seconds-per-month capability.
Dual time-zone indication, with locations modified to suit the client.
Historically informed, one-of-a-kind adaptation of the Grasshopper escapement geometry.
Automatic winding.
Escapement
The escapement is a novel adaptation of John Harrison’s Grasshopper geometry, using two escape wheels rather than the typical single wheel. I have named this variation the “Spider” escapement.
This adaptation explores a long-standing characteristic of the traditional Grasshopper escapement: the differing torque values delivered to the pendulum as a result of the unequal pallet lengths in the original geometry. In practice, the result has been very successful, with good timekeeping performance.
The sound of the clock is very unobtrusive, making it well suited to any domestic environment.
Train
The clock is driven by a Wagner-type remontoire concealed within the backboard. Winding occurs every few seconds, providing uniform power to the gear train. Power for winding is supplied by a high capacity 7Ah 6V cell, allowing the clock to continue operating in the event of a mains power failure. Battery life is in excess of 2 years and easily recharged or replaced.
The center wheel tooth profile and escape-wheel roller pinion are derived using Harrison’s chordal pitch, a type gearing he developed to minimize friction and maximize durability.
Pendulum
The pendulum beats 4.5 degrees, slightly less than a typical Grasshopper arrangement owing to the modified escapement geometry.
Invar is used in the pendulum assembly. This alloy is frequently used in horology because of its thermal stability. Rough regulation is achieved directly on the pendulum bob, while fine regulation is achieved through subsidiary weights positioned above the bob. Beat-setting adjustment is provided at the crutch.
Dials
The dial is arranged in regulator style and displays dual time zones which advance at each hour and are easily adjusted. The time-zone locations can be adjusted to suit the client’s requirements. Seconds are read directly from the left escape wheel, using the pallet as the indicator.
Case
Full-length frame-less tempered Starfire glass.
12V LED lighting with switch.
