Figheadair

Gaelic: Spider

The escapement used in Figheadair is a variation on the Grasshopper escapement, employing double escape wheels rather than the single wheel more typically used.

Rewinding is achieved by a small motor, signaled through a reed switch and magnet arrangement. Operating every few seconds, the winding system gives the clock an animated and active presence, with the repeated rewinding action becoming part of the visual experience.

Constructed in acrylic, copper, brass, and aluminum, the work has a light, skeletal quality that reinforces its spider-like character. The paired escape wheels, exposed mechanism, and frequent bursts of motion give Figheadair a restless mechanical energy, while quartz timekeeping allows the sculptural escapement and winding sequence to remain the central focus.
